Myra’s Obituary Myra Aleise McCormick Cole (Mrs. Harry Q. Cole) Myra McCormick Cole, age 98, passed from this life peacefully early Friday morning, March 22, 2019. She was born in Lexington, Virginia on May 27, 1920 to Mary Frances Crist McCormick and Edgar Lester McCormick. She graduated from Lexington High School and Mary Washington College and was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Roanoke, Virginia where she participated in the choir, Young People’s Service League and Girl Scouts. She also played in the local symphony as a violinist. During World War II she was commissioned an Ensign in the US Naval Reserve at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts prior to being stationed in the Logistics Planning Division of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts in Washington, D.C. During the Korea War, she was recalled into the Navy as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade and reported to the U.S. Naval Supply Corps School, Bayonne, New Jersey. There she was commissioned as a Lieutenant and graduated as the only lady officer in a class of 80. She was stationed in Washington D. C. for a short time before becoming the first female Disbursing Officer in the U.S. Navy. Her last Navy duty was serving as Disbursing Officer at the US Naval Hospital, San Diego California. She married Lieutenant Commander Harry Q. Cole, USNR, Commander of Underwater Demolition Team No. 1, on December 19, 1953 in Yuma, Arizona. Upon release from active duty, they made their home in Temple, Texas. Mrs. Cole was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Temple where she directed a junior choir and was active with the youth group. She also organized the Chi Rho Guild there and was active with the Episcopal Church Women for a number of years. She was employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Temple for sixteen years, retiring in 1981. After retirement, she studied art at Temple College and became active in the Cultural Activities Center, the VA Women’s Club, the Federated Women’s Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Q. Cole. She leaves behind her two daughters, Dawn Cole and Donna Cole Huffman, three grandchildren, Clayton Roy Payne, Jennifer Dawn Payne and Kara Cole Quates, and three great grandchildren. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at the William R. Courtney Texas Veterans’ Home for providing outstanding care in her final days and to Charlotte and Charles Ramm and Betty Elliott for decades of being wonderful neighbors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the William R. Courtney Texas Veterans Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church in Temple, Texas and the family will be accepting visitors at the Scanio-Harper Funeral Home on Monday, March 25, 2019 between 5:00 and 7:00 PM.
