F. Royce Carter, born October 26, 1927, passed away peacefully in his home on September 26, 2018. Royce lived a wonderfully full life where he earned many titles, including that of husband, father, grandpa, brother, pharmacist, businessman, cowboy, and friend. Royce grew up in Park Valley and Corinne, Utah. He loved these lands of his childhood, where he worked on his family’s farm alongside his parents and siblings. He loved the outdoors and animals of all kinds. He also loved his five younger siblings, whom he made many memories with during these formative years and throughout the rest of his life. Royce attended Box Elder High School and was a good student, in spite of his struggles with a childhood bone illness. During high school, he played the trumpet in a dance orchestra where he met “his” piano player, Bette Iversen. Bette later became his wife during his sophomore year at Idaho State College in 1947. Royce attended pharmacy school there in Idaho and earned his pharmacy degree while Bette worked and raised their small children. Royce’s education led to a successful and fulfilling career as a pharmacist and businessman, both in Ogden and in Clearfield, Utah. Royce opened his own pharmacy in Clearfield in 1952 and he ran that business for nearly 40 years, first known as the Clearfield Pharmacy and later known as the Medicine Shoppe. Royce, Bette, and their children often operated the store together, which started as a traditional, old-fashioned pharmacy and gift shop. Royce and his family enjoyed their many associations made throughout that experience as they worked with and served the Clearfield community. Royce was a cowboy at heart and loved all things horses. He imparted that passion to his children and grandchildren, and he enjoyed many trips with his brothers to Antelope Island and to the mountains on horseback. Royce also spent many years as an active member of the LDS church, serving in various callings, including Bishopric Counselor and Stake High Councilman. The loss of his wife in 1999 proved to be a great source of sorrow for Royce, and it could be said that his tough cowboy heart was subsequently softened. He was blessed by the help of co-workers and friends during these years that eventually led him to meet and marry Nadene Roberts in 2003. Royce found much companionship and solace with Nadene during his golden years of life. The two moved to Tremonton together, and Royce finished his career there as a part-time pharmacist. Royce and Nadene spent his later years enjoying trips with his siblings, celebrating big events with children and grandchildren, and establishing their home in Elwood. Royce is preceded in death by his two infant children Caroll and Randall, his parents, Floyd and Elma Carter, his wife Bette Iversen Carter, his son Brent Royce Carter, his grandson Christopher Carter Luke, and his brother John Carter. He is survived by his wife, Nadene Carter, and her six children, Ralph (Dixie), Norene (Jeff), Thayne (Laura), Holly (Doug), Geneil (Joedy), and Brad (Melissa) along with her 26 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Surviving children are Carma Luke (Doug), Marti Carter, (daughter-in-law) Julie Taylor (Ted), and Jeff Carter. He has 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren who will miss him dearly. Also surviving are brothers, Keith Carter, Rod Carter, Maurice Carter, and sister Elaine Norman. Thanks to Nadene for her loving care of Royce. We want to thank Hospice of Utah for their kindness and caring in the last weeks; also, thanks to Dr. John Markesen, Dr. Carl R. Gray, and Dr. J. Lee Burke. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Elwood 3rd Ward Chapel, 4865 West 9600 North, with a viewing from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. prior to services, along with a viewing Tuesday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Brigham City Myers Mortuary, 205 South 100 East.
