Ann Weir Sizemore 2018

Ann Weir Sizemore passed peacefully on September 23, 2018 after a brief period at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. She was born October 19, 1938 in Asheville. Ann was a lifelong and much-beloved educator. She taught scores of South Asheville youth at Valley Springs and Estes Elementary. Even after retirement, she returned to Estes where she pulled a red, Radio-Flyer wagon full of books from room to room to read to children. Her legacy is found throughout the community with the generations of children she taught to read, write and in whom she instilled the love of learning. Ann grew up in the Roberson community and was proud to have lived, loved and taught where she was raised. In addition to teaching, Ann introduced many Roberson District school students to square dancing, a mountain tradition Ann learned from her parents and passed down to many generations. Her square dance teams competed throughout Western North Carolina and in State competitions where they won countless awards; more importantly for her, they learned and carried on a mountain-folk heritage of art, fun and togetherness. Among Ann’s many amazing qualities was her ability to recognize a student who she had taught some 25 or more years ago. A caring and energetic soul, she befriended everyone she met; and, she was fortunate to both love and be loved by so many people whose lives she touched. She was a life-long and active member of Skyland United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working with youth groups; and, for many years she, her husband and other church members took Church youth on camping trips to Myrtle Beach. In more recent years, she worked with other church members in serving food to other church members and the community. Many of the members of her Sunday school class have been together for 40+ years having developed deep bonds of friendship. Ann is the daughter of the late Hal and Martha Weir. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ed; her sister, Carol Peterson and brother-in-law, Bruce; son, Steven and daughter-in-law, Jill; and, grandchildren Hannah, Meredith and Marshall. Ann’s family thanks the care providers and Ann’s friends at Arbor Terrace for their wonderful care, support and friendship. In addition, the family thanks the providers at the Keever Solace Center for their kind assistance to Ann, her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Skyland United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ann Sizemore Scholarship Fund, c/o Buncombe Co. Schools Foundation, 175 Bingham Road, Asheville NC 28806. This scholarship will benefit aspiring elementary education teachers. Alternatively, please consider donating an elementary age book to the Ann W. Sizemore Library at Estes Elementary; these donations can be brought to the memorial service or to Estes Elementary, 275 Overlook Road, Asheville.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Ann Weir Sizemore 2018.
