Obituary of Martha Ayers of Sun City Center, FL, formerly of Elmira, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2018. Born on June 28, 1922, in Syracuse, NY she is predeceased by her parents, Mary and Leroy Wright of Newark, NY, her husband, Paul F. Ayers of Elmira, her daughter, Mary J. Ayers of Mission Viejo, CA., and her brother, Leroy Wright of Boynton Beach, FL. Martha worked as an RN in Elmira. During her career she worked for the Chemung County Health Dept., taught nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital and finally as a school nurse teacher in the Horseheads School District until retirement. She lived in NY until she moved to Sun City Center, FL, in early 2013 to be closer to her son, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She loved seeing them all. Survivors include her son, Lee (Carol) of Tampa, FL and granddaughters, Christy Ayers (George) of Davie, FL, Jackie Ayers of Davie, FL, and Stephanie Humphrey (Keith) of Tallahassee, FL., sister-in-law Liesel Wright of Ponte Vedra, FL. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Pilar, Eva, Jase, Bryce and Jane. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Monday, July 9, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 9:30 a.m., St. Mary’s Church, 224 Franklin Street., Elmira. Interment, with committal prayers, will then take place at St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice in memory of Martha Ayers.
