Obituary of John Flynn John L. Flynn, 68, of Grapevine, Texas passed away on June 27, 2018 at home surrounded by family after a difficult battle with esophageal cancer. John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cynthia “Cindy” Flynn, Grapevine, Texas; his children: Sean (Cathryn), Austin, Texas, Ryan (Megan), San Francisco, California, and Caitlin, Grapevine, Texas; his siblings: Moira Flynn, Barnegat, New Jersey, Brian (Molly), Hermosa Beach, California; his aunt: Lila Early, Lakewood, Washington; and many nephews and niece plus a large extended family. His parents, John TE Flynn and Elizabeth Early Flynn, preceded John in death. A funeral mass and celebration of life will take place at Good Shepherd Catholic Community in Colleyville, Texas at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. John was born February 26, 1950 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. John graduated from All Hallows High School in the Bronx, New York in 1968 before attending the University of St. Thomas in St Paul, Minnesota, earning his degrees in Political Science in 1972 and an MBA in1983. In 2011, John earned a PMP certificate, which furthered his Project Management accomplishments. During his career, he worked for various companies including Michaels Arts & Crafts, CompUSA, and Sally Beauty Supplies. He developed not only business contacts but also wonderful friendships. John was always ready to help and loved being in a work environment; helping people was his passion. In 2017, John became active with Southlake Focus Group. He developed many friendships and looked forward to attending the weekly meetings. John was an active adult member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 4 from Colleyville, Texas. While Scout Master and Committee Chair, John lived up to the principals of the Scout Oath and Law as he mentored young scouts. His adventures with Troop 4 included leading treks to Philmont, trying his hand at rock climbing instruction, and the art of flipping canoes. There was never a dull moment. John’s hobbies included making home brew beer and Texas BBQ. His son Ryan shared his passion for brewing beer and the two often discussed the chemistry of yeasts and hops. They enjoyed visiting breweries for “samples” of their favorite beers for “scientific reasons.” His favorite t-shirt, “My favorite animal is Brisket,” sums up his love of all things BBQ. Researching recipes, experimenting with cooking methods, and working to make the perfect meat was his passion. He would frequently send his son Sean messages about his latest rub or marinade and want to dissect the most recent BBQ podcast he listened to. Over the past year he traveled across the state with Sean and his wife checking out some of the Top 50 BBQ pits in Texas. On a sweeter rather than savory note, he was famous for his cranberry tartlets and would jump at the chance to share them with co-workers and friends. Caitlin, his youngest and only girl, had a special relationship with her dad. He endearingly called her his “Punkie” (short for pumpkin) and could talk with for hours about her job and life. John was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He loved being with his family and reminiscing with old friends. The family sends heartfelt thanks to all of his friends and family who reached out to him with prayers and encouragement during this very difficult time. It helped keep him strong and he felt the love.
