Helen E. Smith, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away May 25, 2018 at her residence. She was born September 19, 1931 in Marion County to the late Lyal and Lucille E. (Totten) Sands. Helen married Gail L. Smith on April 29, 1951 in Jefferson County. They were blessed with nearly 48 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 10, 1999. Helen is survived by her children, Karen Browning of Mount Vernon and Gary D. Smith of Desloge, Missouri; special friend, Thomas “Jake” Hayes of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Kari Lowery and husband, Steven, Tonya Ellis and husband, David, Crystal Browning, and Nathan Smith, all of Mount Vernon, and Ryan Scott Smith of West Virginia; great-grandchildren, Zach Pierce, Ashley Pierce, Danielle Venters, Carver Featherston, Adia Cutler, and Sevren Peterson; brothers, Lyal L. Sands of Mount Vernon, Dale R. Sands of Benton, Robert L. Sands and wife, Karen of Branson, Missouri, and George R. Sands of Edwardsville; sister-in-law, Iris Miller and husband, Jack of Mills Creek; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Gina G. Smith; son-in-law, Daniel Browning; grandson, Adam Louis Smith; and sister, Marietta Sands. Helen will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. A Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 29, 2018 from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. The Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 P.M. with Mr. Michael Sheets officiating. Interment will follow at East Salem Cemetery in Rural Mount Vernon.
