Shirley Lieberman 2018

Shirley Gertrude Lieberman died March 23, 2018 in Annapolis, MD. She was preceded in death by husband Morris and brother Joseph Rattner. She is survived by sons Ron, of Fleetwood, NC, and Jay (Sally) of Minneapolis, MN and by four grandchildren: Melanie (Chad) Fitzpatrick; Dustin (Amy) Spies; and Michael and Hannah Lieberman and sisters-in-law Mickey Rattner and Laurie Lieberman. Shirley was born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 14, 1924. From a very young age, she worked in the dress shop owned by her parents, Sol and Rose Rattner on the North Side. She received a BS in Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh in 1944 and married Morris Lieberman, a physicist, during her junior year. Soon after Shirley graduated from college, the couple moved to Annapolis, where Morris took a position at the former David Taylor Research Center. The family resided on Poplar Street, and Shirley later lived at Heritage Harbor and Ginger Cove. A lifelong Democrat and community activist, Shirley made many contributions to her city and county. After Morris died of a heart attack in 1978, she began volunteering with the American Heart Association and was soon hired as the Director of its Anne Arundel County Division. During her 25 years in this position she organized hundreds of events to raise funds for heart research, teach CPR, and raise public awareness of the benefits of exercise and diet for heart health. Earlier in her career she was a long-time substitute teacher at Annapolis Junior High School. Shirley was a volunteer with the MD Department of Aging for a decade; she was also a past President of Sisterhood Kneseth Israel and of the Annapolis chapter of Hadassah. At Heritage Harbor, Shirley served on the swimming and exercise committees and was on the condominium board. At Ginger Cove, where she lived from 2012 until her death, Shirley started a film class and a Mahjong club, served on the Religious Life Committee, and on the Ginger Cove Foundation and organized dinners and other observances for Jewish holidays and building resident meetings. She founded and for the past four years ran an annual food drive at Ginger Cove to benefit the Anne Arundel County Food Bank; the 2018 food drive, which ended this month, raised over $20,000 in donations. Funeral service will be held at Congregation Kneseth Israel, 1125 Spa Road, Annapolis at 11 a.m. on Monday March 26. Memorials preferred to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank, PO Box 650, Crownsville, MD 21032.
