Obituary Joseph Arthur Massie was born in Ullin, Illinois on January 4, 1939, to the union of Leonard and Maudie (Batts) Massie the oldest of seven siblings, six sisters and one brother. He was affectionately known as the “spoil brat.” His parents and brother, Curtis preceded him in death. Joe attended and graduated from Century High School located in Ullin, Illinois where he excelled in sports. He was popular on the baseball and basketball teams and was known as the best and most favorite player. Joe accepted christ at an early age and was a member of Bell Chapel Church in Ullin, Illinois. After moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1958 he joined Zion Grove Missionary Baptist church under Pastor C.E. Stimmage. He dedicated his life to Christ and was an licensed ordained Minister. He started St. John Free Will Baptist Church in his hometown of Ullin and he also started a church in Chicago. Joe was faithful to God but retired from the ministry due to poor health. After moving to Chicago Joe worked briefly for Agar Meat Packing Company and later became an Insurance Broker owning his own Insurance office. He was self employed for most of his life. In 1976 Joe met Bertha Barry and they were later married on February 14, 1978, with a blended family of ten children. Joe enjoyed fishing, going to the flea market, working in his garden, hanging out “in his garage” and spending time with family. Joseph leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife of 44 years, Bertha; his seven children, Joseph, Jr., Jerome, Lorraine, Denise, Terrence, Terry Massie and Taira (George) Bowers. Two stepdaughters, Angela (Jerome) Stephens and Tamra Hall, one stepson John Barry, III (deceased). Six sisters, Norma Clemons, Lenell Johnson, Gwendolyn (Peter) King, Louise Vasser, LaVerne Bishop and LaWanda (Michael) Jones. Gdbrother, Darryl Broch, sisters-in-law Alice Amerson, Mildred Jackson and Nancy, brothers-in-law Marvin (Jackie) Fulton, thirteen grandchildren, twenty six great grandchildren, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends. He was deeply loved and will truly be missed. Services for Joseph Arthur Massie were held on Saturday October 8, 2022 at 11:30 am at Gatlins Chapel in Chicago, Illinois with Bishop Edwin Walker, officiating.
