Obituary Please share a memory of Hiram to include in a keepsake book for family and friends. View Tribute Book Hiram Vance Jenkins went “from labor to reward,” as he would say, on June 24, 2022, at age 82 after a short stay in Morristown Medical Center, New Jersey. He is predeceased by his brother Nelson, and his life partner Robert “Bob” Hinton. He is survived by his brother Donald Jenkins and his nephew Ron Bruner. Hiram was born to Lillian (Powell) Jenkins and Donald Jenkins on April 10, 1940, in Wilmington, North Carolina. At Wake Forest University in North Carolina he earned a master’s degree in French and Music, specializing in organ composition and performance. In his early career, Hiram was a French teacher at a private high school in New York City. During this time, he met his life partner Bob. Later, Hiram joined Exxon R&D as a technical documentation specialist. Hiram would jokingly state that all pricing and sales involving Exxon crude oil would first require his approval before the transaction could be completed. In retirement, Hiram mentored and cared for children at the YMCA and church. Hiram and Bob lived together in Madison for over 40 years. They filled their home with beautiful antiques and art and designed and cultivated a backyard paradise garden. They always enjoyed parenting a cat (and Amadeus is now at St. Hubert’s). Hiram was always a master and student of the arts. He was an avid reader, and proficient in New York Times puzzles. He had a gift for engaging friends in lively discussions over tea, about religion, music, and social issues. Every Sunday, Hiram called his brother Nelson, who was developmentally challenged, and one would think that two teenagers were out on the town as laughter would fill the room. Hiram was discerning and charitable with his time, talent, and resources. He was regularly called upon to offer his sage wisdom on everything from art and fashion to relationship matters. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Hiram’s name to the St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Ave, Madison New Jersey, 07940. Even during times of social distancing, anyone who has suffered a loss deserves love and support more than ever before.
