March 26 1922 November 20 2022
On Sunday evening of November 20, 2022 Mom’s candle went out, but her light still shines. She was surrounded by those who loved her as she peacefully passed at her home. Betty had celebrated her 100th birthday in March of this year where she shared laughs and stories with many friends and family. Born on March 26, 1922, in Boise, Idaho, Betty was the youngest of three children born to James A. and Susan H. Wilson. The family would later return home to Raceland, Kentucky. Betty followed her older brother to Elmont, Virginia, where she met the love of her life, Carlton. Following World War II, the couple were married and spent several years in Warsaw, Virginia. In 1953 they made the move to Charlottesville where they would spend the rest of their lives. Betty was employed by State Farm Insurance for 15 years before joining her husband in his purchase and operation of Southern States Petroleum Services. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Carlton R. Brooks, Sr.; her brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Betty Wilson; and her sister, Roberta Wright. She is survived by her son, Carlton R. “Tony” Brooks, Jr. and his wife Heidi; nieces, Linda McKinley and Betty Vanderpool, both of Kentucky; and nephews, Malcom, Wayne, and Edwin Schwartz, all of Virginia. Her grandDOGter Callie always gave her kisses and made her smile. Betty would tell everyone that she was blessed to be under the medical care of Dr. Lindsay Friesen and Libby Showalter, RN, as well as Dr. Chris Rembold and Leigh Harris, RN. Thanks especially to Ellen White, Arclincia Cooke, Robin Perkins, Tracy Johnson, Christelle Cooke-Cain, Kelly, Austin and Gary Drumheller. We couldn’t have made this journey without you. Her family would also like to thank the caring and compassionate services of Hospice of the Piedmont. Our community is blessed beyond measure to have them here. Betty and Carlton were charter members of Cherry Avenue Christian Church where they worshipped the Word of God for well over 50 years. Her family would like to thank the outreach from their church family, including the administering of Holy Communion on the Sunday before her passing. There will be a private burial on the Friday after Thanksgiving with Reverend Stan Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, Betty, Heidi and Tony ask that you take a moment to check in or visit with an elderly loved one in your lives. The blessing will surely be yours. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family on Hill and Wood’s Tribute Wall.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Betty Wilson Brooks March 26 1922 November 20 2022.
