Taylor, 76, passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the East Orange VA Medical Center in East Orange, NJ, with his family by his side. Born and raised in Newark, NJ to the late George H. Taylor, Jr. and Joy Davis (nee Lent), he resided in Iselin for several decades before settling in Flemington in 2015. Raymond was a proud combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1963 to 1967, ultimately as a member of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion 2nd Platoon where he earned the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Vietnam and the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, among other awards and citations. He was an active advocate for all combat veterans in obtaining their rightfully earned veteran’s benefits upon arrival back to the United States, benefits for which they sacrificed so much for. After his military service, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Rutgers University. He spent most of his professional career in grocery distribution and logistics, working for Wakefern Food Corporation, Key Foods and Pathmark, among others. He held multiple positions in The Military Order of the Purple Heart including NJ State Commander. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and building HO scale model train layouts. He also enjoyed maintaining his giant fish tank and collecting unique sea shells. One of his many talents included gardening. There was always a garden overflowing with vegetables in our backyard. He even built a grape arbor on the side of our home where he grew Concord grapes for many years. Ray was superb at selecting fruits and vegetables at the supermarket, and we all benefited from his expertise. Ray was also a self taught carpenter, using his skills to build decks, additions to our home, including finishing our basement, as well as projects in other peoples’ homes. Ray loved all sports, he was a Chicago White Sox, NY Yankees, NY Jets, Dallas Cowboys and NJ Devils fan too! He was an avid reader, particularly of Clive Cussler and Robert Ludlum, and also enjoyed mystery shows featuring Poirot and Agatha Christie. He enjoyed long “Sunday drives” with his wife and family, often antiquing and making farm stand stops. Ray was his family’s fiercest protector and biggest advocate, his greatest joy came from raising his family and spending quality time with them, especially his grandchildren. Besides his parents, Raymond was predeceased by his loving wife of 50+ years, Susan H. Taylor in March of this year, daughter Dr. Victoria Callahan (nee Taylor) in 2017, and nephew Michael Heuer in 2018. Raymond is survived by his beloved daughter, Jennifer and her husband Ian Wyatt of Flemington, son, Jeffrey Taylor and his wife Jennifer of Califon, and son-in-law Richard Callahan of Phillipsburg, NJ. He will be deeply missed by his five cherished grandchildren, Emerson, Rachel, Jacob, Isabella, and Caleb; dear nephews, Jason Heal and wife Jacqueline, David Heuer and wife Kimberly, and dear niece, Paige Sourbeer and husband David; as well as several grand-nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation at Countryside Funeral Home, 724 Route 202 North, Three Bridges, NJ 08887 on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 1-4 p.m. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Brigadier General William C.
