Joan’s Obituary Saratoga Springs – Joan D. Pehl passed away peacefully on December 2, 2021 surrounded by her family. Joan was born June 20, 1931 to the late Peter and Helen Dwyer in Greenfield Center, NY. She fondly remembered her time living on Alpine Meadows Road with her older siblings Bill, Rita, John and George. She spoke often about attending a one room school house prior to the family moving to Saratoga Springs where she attended the then named Saint Peter’s Academy. Joan married Charles (Charlie) Pehl in 1949 after Charlie had returned from serving in the Marines during World War II. They were married for 61 years before Charlie passed in 2009. Joan had creative and artistic talent, she loved art projects and design and possessed a keen sense of style. Joan’s favorite pastime was scouting out garage sales with her daughter Betsy and nieces Pat, Nancy, Maureen and Eileen. She had the ability to spot the beauty in something that others could not. Many of these items found their way to Joan’s Monroe Street home near the racetrack. Though Joan did not like the gambling she loved the horses. Charlie and Joan operated Sun-Brite Laundromat on Church Street for many years and our family still to today hear our slogan “you bring We do it”. Joan loved her little home on Monroe Street and she and Charlie hosted many family back yard pool parties over the years and they had the BBQ rotisserie down! Joan was an excellent cook and with an Irish/Austrian heritage she developed a talent for Italian cooking. Over the years she took up different sports, skiing at Alpine Meadows (though we think she liked the bar better than the T-Bar). Joan took up golf playing Brookhaven and the Spa course as well as participating in the Ladies League at the Par 29. Joan was an avid reader and loved the new library and attending the brown bag lunches. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Saratoga Springs History Museum in the Canfield Casino. Joan truly loved Saratoga and enjoyed walking on Broadway visiting the shops. Joan was all about family. She and Charlie were very supportive and understanding as well as always pushing people to better themselves. She loved being with her children and their children. Though Joan was battling Alzheimer’s Disease for the last 9 years of her life she never let it get her down and kept her sense of humor and wit right to the very end. Joan is predeceased by her husband Charlie, son Mark, sister Rita McCarthy and brothers Bill, John and George. She is survived by her children Betsy (Bob) Macier and Tim (Patti) Pehl as well as 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by sister-in-law Patricia Dwyer and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4 to 6pm on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at William J. Burke and Sons Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-269-9015). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, at 11am on Thursday, December 9th with interment to follow at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville at 12:30pm. The family asks that you consider donations to the Alzheimer’s Association (4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205) to help fight this awful disease.
