Filomena “Phyllis”‘s Obituary Filomena Ann (La Grutta) Garofalo passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at Concord Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lakewood at the age of 96 and 11 months. Phyllis, her nick name, was born in October of 1924 to Anthony La Grutta and Angelina (Auolisi) La Grutta. She grew up in Newark, NJ. She worked for the Schiffman Mattress Factory in Newark before she married Edward J. Garofalo, Sr. in 1944. Phyllis and Ed moved to Bloomfield, NJ in 1952 where they raised their family, and Phyllis was a homemaker for many years. They retired to Brick in 1983 to be closer to the family. Filomena was a communicant of St. Martha’s Church, Pt. Pleasant and was a member of the Association of the Miraculous Medal in Newark. She was predeceased by her husband Edward J. Garofalo, Sr. in 2013; her brothers and sisters Nicolas Morano, Theresa Crisafulli, Rose Paglialonga, James Morano and Nicolas LaGrutta; and her grandson, David Garofalo in 2008. Surviving are her son and daughter-in law Edward Garofalo, Jr. and his wife Mary Ellen of Dover; her daughter Patricia Perkins of Brick; her grandchildren Valerie Gunthner and her husband Eric, and Christy Scalese and her husband, Anthony. She has two great grandchildren, Anthony Scalese and Lindsay Gunthner. Visitation will be Sunday, September 19th from 2:00-6;00pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Hwy. 88, Brick. A Funeral Service will be held Monday 10:00 am at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington, NJ.
