Calvin Ray Culp December 19, 2021 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Calvin Ray Culp, 73, passed away on December 18, 2021 after a brief illness. He was born in Newport News on September 8, 1948 and graduated from Denbigh High School, Class of 1966. After graduation he began his career at Coats and Clark. After his service to our country in the Army, Calvin returned to Coats and Clark until they closed on the Peninsula. He was then employed by Grapha which is currently Mueller-Martini. Upon retirement in 2012, he joined his wife Tanya (Susie) in running the Elmer Back Gifting Center. In the sixth grade Calvin told Sue that he was going to marry her. He married his childhood sweetheart on November 16, 1968. During Calvin’s years of service, he was based in Germany. Sue joined him and started a family during his deployment. For almost 20 years, Calvin and Susie have run the Elmer Back Gifting Center which helps nonprofit organizations provide services and supplies to help with the elderly, disabled, children, sick and needy in the community. He was a lifelong resident of Newport News. Calvin is preceded in death by his grandmother who raised him, “Granny Roscoe”, his mother Miriam Bayne, brother Ricky Bayne and a sister Caroline Bayne. Calvin passed away just three days before his sweetheart Susie. They leave behind three children: Kevin Culp (Christy), Kerry Culp and Kerrin Culp Palmer Patrizio (John) and dedicated their life to raising two of their grandchildren Corey Culp (Isabella) and Codi Culp (Samantha). He leaves behind several grandchildren: Kyle, Gabby, Destiny, Kari, Dakota, Julie-Ann Palmer Davidson, Danielle Palmer Mireau, Cheyenne and Christain. Also left behind are a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins; a brother Larry Culp and sisters-in-law Pam Back and Anita Back Adkins (Okey). The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home from 6-7:30 PM.
