Obituary for Barry Phillip Harris Sr Barry Phillip Harris, Sr., 71, of Charlotte, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Novant Health in Huntersville. Barry was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on September 2, 1949. He grew up in Charlotte. Barry worked for Overnight Trucking Company, starting as a mechanic and then 17 years later, driving 18 wheelers before retiring after 32 years of faithful service. He enjoyed seeing different places while he worked. He played Santa every year in multiple places for over 20 years like at the Catawba reservation, the YMCA and even at a Animal hospital for a couple years. Barry loved doing wood work like building things with his hands. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t fix. He was an amazing mechanic, truck driver, Sunday school teacher, leather maker, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Barry has done many things for the community like working with Hearts and Hammers with his church, Hickory Grove Baptist, helping build ramps and things people needed. He loved helping teach bible school at the church every year and Sunday school every Sunday. Barry loved to travel, mainly to the beach, which is where he had his last amazing adventure with his wife and both sons, he even caught a stingray on the pier fishing with his sons like old times. He was very proud of his Catawba heritage and told everyone all about it when he met you. He worked even when he retired at O’Reillys auto parts, umping baseball games and teaching Pickle ball at the YMCA. Barry loved going to the YMCA with his wife multiple times a week; he enjoyed Pickle ball and just hanging out with people he could meet. Baseball umpiring came as a natural to Barry, which he enjoyed doing. Throughout his sons lives he coached his boys and watched all their baseball games growing up. Barry always stayed involved with his children and his grandchildren’s lives. In fact, the most important thing in Barry’s life was the time spent with family and friends, and he will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. Barry is survived by his wife of 46 years Joyce Sikes Harris; his son, Barry “Phil” Phillip (wife Nickie) Harris, Jr.; his son Michael “Mike” William (wife Leigh) Harris; his 4 grandchildren: Airman 1st Class Andrew Harris, Jack Whitworth, Drew Morris and Lily Morris; his sisters Teresa (husband Don) Kennington, Loretta (husband Charles) Gober and brother Donald (wife Pat) Harris. Barry is preceeded in death by his parents, Wilford and Beulah Harris, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 7200 E WT Harris Blvd, on Saturday, June 12, 2021. Visitation will begin at 1 pm with service to follow at 2 pm.
