December 12 1934 October 28 2021
Alice Hopkinson Alice Frutchey Hopkinson, of Jupiter Island Florida, passed away in Palm Beach County October 28, 2021 at the age of 86. She was born December 12, 1934, in Paterson NJ, the daughter of Raymond Prescott Frutchey and Pauline Adelaide Frutchey. Alice graduated with a BS in Chemistry from Indiana University, the first person in her family to attend college. After college, Alice worked as an organic chemist in the pharmaceutical industry for Ciba-Geigy AG in NJ and later as a high school chemistry and math teacher. She married Reginald F Hopkinson, also from Paterson, in 1957, and settled in Smoke Rise, Kinnelon NJ. While raising three children, Alice started one of the first SAT prep and tutoring companies, the Green Hill Review School. When Kinnelon High School suffered the temporary loss of their senior chemistry and math teacher, Alice jumped in to fill the position after a 20 year gap since her last teaching role. She was one of the early adopters of the home computer, and later developed software for a variety of uses, including a health club package that was sold commercially. She pursued a variety of innovations in education, including teaching complex topics like the structure of an atom to elementary school age students. She was a true Renaissance woman, known for being a gourmet cook and hosting entertaining parties where she would make all the food herself. Mutton pies and clam chowder were her specialities, and her Fourth of July party was the highlight of the summer for her Smoke Rise friends. She was an avid sportswoman. As a child she was an accomplished swimmer, ice skater and ping pong player, and she learned golf, tennis and skiing as an adult. As a young mother in Smoke Rise, she was one of the first women to compete in the sailing competitions on Lake Kinnelon. She read voraciously, was a true student of biblical history and loved bridge. While residing in Smoke Rise, she was a member and vestry member of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kinnelon NJ, as well as a member of the Rockaway River Country Club. Reg and Alice semi-retired to Jupiter Island FL in 2010. While in Florida, Alice continued her passion for golf, tennis and bridge, as well as her work tutoring students. She was an active member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, the Jupiter Inlet Colony Beach Club, and the Hobe Sound Golf Club. She also served as President of the local chapter of P.E.O. International and as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Alice was married to her beloved husband Reg for 61 years until he passed away April 22, 2018. Like Reg, Alice lived entirely independently until two weeks before her death. In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by her brother Raymond. She is survived by her three children: Barbara Hopkinson Kelly and her husband Kevin Kelly of Cranbury, NJ, R. Ronald Hopkinson and his wife Sue Hopkinson of Aspen CO, and Susan Hopkinson Fishman of San Francisco, CA. Alice was also the proud grandmother, as well as teacher, mentor and role model, to her eight grandchildren, Ryan Kelly, Allison Kelly, Oliver Hopkinson, Haley Hopkinson, Macy Hopkinson, Alexandra Fishman, Cameron Fishman and Peter Fishman. She is also survived by her nephews Greg and Brian Frutchey. A Memorial Service and Interment will be held at 2:00PM, Saturday, January 15, 2022, at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 400 Seabrook Road, Tequesta, FL. A reception will follow at the Jupiter Inlet Colony Beach Club, 200 Ocean Drive, Jupiter Inlet Colony FL. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please send a donation in Alice’s name to The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. For online condolences, please visit .www.taylorandmodeen.com
