December 22 1960 November 2 2021
Alan “Ski” Szynski, age 60, of Englewood, OH, passed away with his beloved wife by his side, on November 2, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. Ski was born in South Bend, IN on December 22, 1960, son of the late Eugene and Alice Szynski. Stories from his childhood often included phrases like “…before their mom found out…”and “…lucky to have survived…”, so it’s a wonder he made it to adulthood, but Ski was able to graduate high school and join the Air Force. He spent the first three years in Alconbury England, then to Offutt AFB in Omaha Nebraska where he met Marcy. After she saw him break dance on a coffee table and practically blow up his apartment tossing gun powder wrapped in tinfoil into his fireplace, she knew he was the one. She had to chase him around for a year until he realized it though. Ski’s greatest love was for his wife Marcy. Their humble wedding ceremony in Panama resulted in 35 years of wedded bliss, many adventures around the world and two daughters he reminded often of his love and pride. His happiness only grew as his family expanded with two sons-in-law and three grandchildren who adored their Papa. Ski’s love for his family was closely follow by his love for dogs. Home for him often meant the love of a loyal dog or three, with one frequently named Lady. When he wasn’t spending time with his family and dogs, Ski could often be found playing computer games, going to shooting ranges or reading from books and magazines. Because of his love for reading, Ski could tell you a fact or two about pretty much anything… as long as you didn’t get him started on math. His grandchildren loved testing his breadth of knowledge on animals; both current and prehistoric. The rest of the world got to enjoy his fondness for military history, cool architecture and whatever featured on the history or science channel that week. One of Ski’s greatest joys was spreading happiness to others. Whether through his years of sending funny emails or his Facebook wall of memes, he wanted to share laughter. He didn’t always tell you things were going to be ok. He sometimes told you how bad things could get, then made you laugh anyways. There was a magic in the way he could ease the news of progressing cancer with a well-timed fart joke. Ski will be missed by his wife Marcy, brothers Rick (Sue), Larry and Terry (Teri), daughters Jenny (James) and Ally (Tylor) as well as his grandchildren Lilly, Charlie, and Andy. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Bobby. So many thanks go out to the amazing nurses and doctors at the Wright Patterson AFB Cancer Center. Ski was never shy with giving praise where it was due and would tell anyone who would listen about the amazing care and kindness he received while being treated there. There is no way to thank Dee, Jennifer, Dr. Bukhari, Paul aka Chuck Roast and Brenda for the amazing care at the end. Per Ski’s wishes, no funeral services will be held. Those who wish to honor and celebrate his life are encouraged to go donate blood or to the American Red Cross.
