Thomas Smith Sr. October 15, 1943 – September 17, 2020 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Thomas (Gale) Smith, Sr., 76, passed away on September 17, 2020 at 3:33 pm. Gale passed away peacefully in his home while surrounded by his family and loved ones. Gale was born to the late Homer and Velvie (Halliburton) Smith on October 15, 1943. He has been married to the love of his life Joan (Naramore) Smith for 57 years. Gale is survived by his children, Tommy, Jeff (Beverly), and Christina, his brother Rondal (Gloria) and sister Katrina. He loved spending time with his 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson Trey, who was awaiting his arrival with a fishing pole in his hand, in addition to his brothers Randy and Louis. Gale graduated from George Washington High School in 1961 and retired from General Motors after 31 years of service. He will forever be remembered for his 25 years as president at Carnine Little League and the many lives that he influenced through the years. We were able to bring a smile to his face in his final days as we reminisced about the many ball games, fish frys and youth that he was able to follow over time. He was a sports enthusiast who loved Notre Dame football and IU basketball. Gale supported his grandkids and rarely missed a game or event during the many years of their youth, high school and college days. Nothing made him happier than sitting in his rocker on the front porch of the family hunting cabin telling stories while the campfire blazed nearby. He always made sure the cabin was warm while everyone slept upstairs. Visitation will be held at Conkle Funeral Home in Avon, Indiana on Sunday, September 20, 2020 from 3 – 7 pm and on Monday from 10 – 11:30 am. The service will begin at 11:30 am and burial will be at West Newton Cemetery immediately following.
