Leonard Leroy Jondle, 87 of Promise City, passed away in his home on September 28, 2020. Leonard was born on January 29, 1933 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Ernest and Fannie Jondle. He attended country schools in Webster County, spent one year of his schooling in Idaho, and graduated from Otho High School in 1951. On July 14, 1951, Leonard married Josephine Urban, and together they lived in an upstairs apartment in Fort Dodge where he was employed at East Side Lumber and Coal and later worked for Cargill. In 1954, Leonard took a job in Gowrie for Harold Telleen as a farm hand before accepting a job at Roberts Coop Elevator, later moving to the company house after becoming manager of the Elevator. He was the youngest elevator manager in the state of Iowa and had the first liquid fertilizer plant in Iowa as well as the first 60 foot deck scale with automatic dial. Leonard was injured after falling 20 feet to the ground after the grain elevator broke. His arm had to be reattached and finally began to heal after many months spent wearing a cast. In 1961, Leonard took a job with Agrico Chemical Company in Humboldt, moving to Webster City and later buying an acreage in Humboldt. In September of 1969, the family moved to a farm in southern Iowa when Leonard was hired on as manager the Farmers Coop in Seymour, later organizing the WA Coop in Seymour and hiring Duane Rupalo as his second man. Farming was what Leonard especially loved, so he made a decision to leave the elevator to focus more on raising a farm. He later accepted a job at Modern Muzzleloader in Centerville. In 1995, Leonard moved to his present home in Promise City. After retiring from Modern Muzzleloader, he established a lawn mowing business which he had for several years. Leonard was a member of the Seymour United Methodist Church, Western Bohemian Lodge, Solid Waste Commission, the Promise City Booster Club where he took care of the pop machine for several years, and served on City Council until retiring last year due to his health. Leonard also served as treasurer of the Wayne county ARC for over 40 years. Leonard is survived by his wife Jo of 69 years; two sons, Bruce (Debra) Jondle and Brian (Marni) Jondle; three daughters, Bonnie (Carl) Wray, Carol (Ron) Russell and Paula Pershy; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 4 great- great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
