Andrew’s Obituary Andrew A. Schiavone, Sr. 99, of Media, PA, formerly of Bangor, PA, passed away Tuesday, September 8th, at his residence. Andrew was born in South Philadelphia, PA on July 28, 1921, a son of the late Louis and Sadie (Ferraro) Schiavone. He was the husband of Cellerina J. (Donnini) Schiavone. Together, they would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on September 10, 2020. Andrew was a 1939 graduate of Bangor High School, and a 1941 graduate of the former Dolan College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. He was a licensed Funeral Director and owner and operator of the former Schiavone Funeral Home in Bangor, PA, for 36 years until retiring in 1984. He was a Pharmacist Mate First Class in the US Coast Guard in WWII serving aboard the attack transport and flagship the USS Bayfield, A.P.A. 33, participating in the invasion of Normandy and southern France. On Iwo Jima and Okinawa, he was a member of the Marine’s Medical Corp and went ashore on Iwo Jima on D-Day. When the war ended he went back to Philadelphia to recruit for the Coast Guard. Andrew was a self-taught award-winning artist. He held several one-man art shows, including shows at Temple University and the Hahnemann Medical College. Andy was a playing manager of several championship softball teams in both the Slate Belt and Blue Valley Softball Leagues in the 1950s. Andy was also an avid golfer and winner of several tournaments including the former Roseto Invitational in 1972, 1973, and 1974. Andrew wrote the song “Go, Little Mario, Go!”, that was played at the George Washington Motor Lodge Banquet in Allentown Honoring Mario Andretti for winning the 1969 Indianapolis 500. He was a former member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Bangor, PA. In addition to his wife Cellerina, Andrew is survived by two sons Dr. Ronald L. Schiavone, husband of Laura of Voorhees, NJ, and Dr. Andrew A. Schiavone, Jr., husband of Debbie of Alexandria, VA, a daughter in law Gertrude Schiavone of Buckingham, VA, a son in law Leon Aron, 9 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter Dr. Carol Schiavone Aron, a son Gary A. Schiavone, a sister Grace Salvada, and three brothers John, David, and Gene Schiavone Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Monday, September 14, 2020, at James B. Gaffney Funeral Home, 314 S. First Street, Bangor, PA. Family and friends are invited to call from 11 AM to 1 PM on Monday, September 14th at the funeral home. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, only 25 people will be allowed in the visitation room with rotations in place, face masks and social distancing are required at all times. Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Pen Argyl, PA. Online condolences may be offered at gaffneyparsons.com.
