Vasilios “Bill” Galanis, 80, of Elgin, passed away Friday, June 26, 2020, at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago. He was born August 1, 1939, in Aghiorghitika, Greece the son of Spiro and Christina (Orfanos) Galanis. Bill arrived in the USA in 1960, he married Soula Hagegregoriou on March 1, 1970. Bill purchased the Village Inn in Huntley in 1980. Bill loved Huntley. He was very proud of his friendships he built over 40 years with his customers and the community he loved. He also acquired Clausens Tavern in Union, which he operated from 1996-2003. He loved sports, especially the Bears, Bulls, and St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed a Dewars on the rocks with a good cigar. Bill was a longtime member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin. Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Soula; their children, Christina Kamberis, Spiro Galanis, and Maria (Konstantinos) Arfanakis; loved Papou of Venetia, Gia, and Leo; sisters, Angie (Emanuel) Blazakis, Christina (Panagioti) Triandopoulos, Giannoula Veliziotis; a brother, Pete (Eleni) Galanis; sister-in-law, Betty Galanis; many nieces, nephews, and countless good friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jimmy Galanis. Public visitation will be on Wednesday, July 1 from 4-8 PM with prayers at 6 PM at the James A. O’Connor Funeral Home, 11603 E. Main St., Huntley. As expected, there will be many people who will want to pay their respects, please be mindful of the guests by wearing masks and practicing social distancing. The Funeral Service at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 525 Church St., Elgin is private. A funeral procession to River Valley Memorial Gardens in West Dundee will follow. After the service, friends are welcome to accompany the family to the cemetery and should arrive at the church at 11:45 AM. Please omit flowers, memorial contributions in Bill’s name should be addressed to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, 525 Church St., Elgin, IL 60123.
