Obituary PRESQUE ISLE – Gilford A. Berube, 85 passed away on the morning of June 24, 2020 at home after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born in Mapleton on May 28,1935 the son of Nomie (Tom) and Odile (Brasslett) Berube. Gil worked many years for George Brown on his farm but decided he wanted a better life for his family so he opened his first business in 1960 which was a Shell Station and Repair Shop on Main Street, Presque Isle. He started the first ambulance service but after a few years he passed it on to the Lamb family. Always looking for more to do he started Gil’s Sanitation which is still being operated today by his son Tom. The Auto Repair & Towing Service (Gil’s Service Center) was run together with his 2 sons Terry & Bruce until such time they opened up Presque Isle Auto Parts (NAPA) always keeping his hands in all 3 businesses until his retirement in 2010. Throughout his life he had many successes with his wife Marie until her untimely passing in August of 2010. He was involved in many local organizations such as the Volunteer Fire Department from which he retired in the late 70’s. He started the first motorcycle club based out of Presque Isle. He was a very strong supporter and active member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2524. He held many positions including being a 4th Degree member. He was an active member of the Northern Maine Antique Tractor Club and loved to pull his tractor when he was able. His favorite place in the world to be was at camp on St. Froid Lake spending time with his family, especially his great grandchildren. Gil was predeceased by his parents Nomie and Odile Berube, his loving wife Marie of 56 years, a brother Gilbert and 2 sisters, Gilva at birth and Gilma Estabrook. He is survived by his 3 sons and their wives Terry & Suzanne, Bruce & Tammy, all of Presque Isle, Tom & Susan of Washburn, a sister, Gilda McKenzie, a brother, Gilman and his wife Anna Berube, both of CT, four grandchildren Alan and his wife Mary Berube of Carmel, Ashley & Matt Lunt of Windsor, ME, Brandon & Becky Berube of West Chapman, and Morgan & Kris Burby of North Carolina, six great grandchildren Michael and Alanna Berube, Paisley and Brystol Lunt, Maggie and Gil Berube. We all would like to thank Alan & Mary and Mary’s mother Linda Sharp and for the excellent care they gave Gil during the last 6 weeks, along with Dr. Jones, Dr. O’Neil, Ruth, Jenny, Margaret, and Pastor George all of Hospice. Calling hours will be held at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home on Sunday June 28th from 2-4 for the public with services being private due to do COVID-19. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you donate a book of your choice to your local library or school in Gil’s memory.
