Obituary Agnes A. MacQuade, 106 January 27, 1914 – June 22, 2020 Gloucester – Agnes A. MacQuade, 106, of Gloucester passed away peacefully at the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Agnes was the wife of the late Joseph Walter MacQuade Sr., with whom she shared a marriage of 57 years. Born in Norwood, MA, Agnes was the daughter of the late Anthony Alukas Sr. and Anna Alukas. Agnes was also predeceased by brothers, Anthony Alukas Jr. and Stephen Alukas, sons, Joseph Walter MacQuade Jr. and Paul Austin MacQuade, and daughter-in-law, Joan Cross MacQuade. Agnes graduated from the Hyannis State Normal School with her teaching degree in 1936 and later earned a master’s degree at what was then Salem State College. Agnes spent her career teaching elementary school at the Lanesville School in Gloucester, MA, then the Horace Mann School in Salem, MA where she mentored numerous student teachers through Salem State College. Agnes was the first of three generations of teachers in her family which made her very proud. After retiring, Agnes wintered in Ormond Beach, FL and traveled with her beloved husband, Jody. Agnes was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Bass Rocks Golf Club. She was known as a dedicated duplicate bridge player who possessed a highly competitive spirit. She loved playing games at frequent family get togethers, especially Trivial Pursuit. She loved when her granddaughter, Xan, and partner, Chris, would join her at Seacoast for Bingo. Even with macular degeneration, Agnes managed to win monthly word contests at Seacoast. She prided herself on keeping a sharp mind. Agnes loved the ocean and spent many beautiful summer days enjoying the beach at Plum Cove with her grown children and grandchildren, always followed by a family cookout. Agnes was famous for her delicious blueberry cake, Christmas plum pudding and brambles which were enjoyed by her family. Agnes will be missed by her daughter-in-law, Sandra Locke of Plymouth, MA, former daughter-in-law, Judy MacQuade of Marblehead, MA, grandchildren, Beth MacQuade of Marblehead, MA, Laurie Card of Danvers, MA, Joel MacQuade of Hampton, NH, Alexandra MacQuade and her partner, Christopher Scandalis, of Hampton, NH, and great grandsons, Griffin and Dylan MacQuade of Hampton, NH. Donations in Agnes’ name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, www.arthritis.org. Arrangements: A private celebration of life for the immediate family will take place later this summer.
