Edwards, 89, of McAlester, died Wednesday, January 29, 2020 in McAlester. The family will greet friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Bishop Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2020 at Bishop Chapel of Memories officiated by Rev. Cliff House and Rev. Bart Patterson. Burial will follow at Pryor Cemetery in Stuart. Pallbearers will be Coy Harrington, Jimmy Lenox, Tom Lenox, Glenn Colley, Terry Colley, Kent Colley, Mike Dunn, and Randy Dunn. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Jackson, Don Dunn, Dewey Wimberly, Dr. Kenneth Miller, and Gary Crawley. Wayne was born on September 13, 1930 to Robert Major and Eula F. (Embry) Edwards in Ashland. He was raised in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School in 1948. He graduated from East Central University at Ada in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army until 1955, and then the U.S. Army Reserve until 1966. Wayne married Wilma Lee Dunn on October 27, 1954 in Ward Springs, Oklahoma. He taught school in Ashland and Stuart where he was a science teacher, girls’ basketball and softball coach; and served as the Stuart elementary school and high school principal, retiring in 1988. He was loved by his students was a positive influence on many lives. He was proud of everyone he had ever taught. Wayne also worked as a farmer and rancher at the family farm in Ashland. He attended Friendship Nazarene Church and, more recently, Lakewood Christian Church. He was a member of the Ashland volunteer fire departments for many years. He loved to attend the Ward Springs Opry where he would sing and listen to country and gospel music. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Wilma Lee Edwards in 2017, grandson: Thomas “Tommy” Edwards, and a sister: Bobbye Jean Edwards. He is survived by his sons: Tony W. Edwards and wife, DeVonna of McAlester, Bobby Edwards and wife, Molly of Stillwater; grandchildren: Amanda Woods and husband, Justin, Kristi Edwards, Ashley Edwards, Travis Edwards, Jonathan Edwards, Samantha Smith and husband, Jeremiah, Tony James Edwards, Robert Edwards; great-grandchildren: Raegan Morris, Addison Woods, Isadore Smith, and Seamus Smith; sister-in-law: Willa Dean Colley; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.
