Ralph Hue Smith, 95, of Wheeling, WV passed away Saturday, January 25, 2020, in Lakeland, Florida. Ralph was born December 19, 1924, in Richwood, WV, a son of the late Raymond B. and Gracie Ellen (Hunt) Smith. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for the U.S. General Service Administration, in both Wheeling & Clarksburg, WV, for 35 years; an employee of the former True Value Hardware, Washington Avenue, Wheeling; and was also employed at the former Hecks Department Store for 19 years. Ralph was a U.S. Army Air Corp. World War II veteran. During WWII, he was a member of the 101st Bombardment Photo Squadron, 74th Bombardment Photo Group, in the 9th Airforce. He transported fuel from Nancy, France to Stuttgart, Germany, to fuel the Flying Tigers. In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen M. (Morrison) Smith, in 2012; and three brothers, Robert Smith, Ronald Smith and Raymond Smith Jr. He is survived by his three sons, Ralph Eugene Smith of Wheeling, Robert Lynn Smith of Lakeland, FL, and Daniel Lee Smith of Wheeling; one sister, Agatha Lee Jersey of Clarksburg, WV; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 5 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received both Wednesday, January 29, and Thursday, January 30, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling WV. A graveside service will be held Friday, January 31, at 2 pm, at Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery, Clarksburg, WV, with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Harrison County Honor Guard. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery.
