Paula was born August 12, 1930, in the City of Passaic, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Haymo Victor and Marjorie Etta Pfister. Her nickname, “Pep”, was derived from the initials of her maiden name: Paula Etta Pfister. She graduated from Plainfield High School in New Jersey and attended Harcum Junior College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She married Walter Harold Johnson, Jr. on March 26, 1949, in Bound Brook, New Jersey. Paula’s principle residences with Walter were in Springfield, Pennsylvania; Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Long Beach Island, New Jersey; and Venice, Florida. Paula was predeceased by her daughter Sandra Joy Johnson and her husband Walter. Her sons Thomas and Walter Johnson, grandson Jared Johnson, and brother Gene Pfister comprise her immediate surviving family. Family members in matrimony are Thomas’s wife, Stephanie Sander, and Jared’s wife, Ilse Reyes Medina. Her dear friend Debra Blake loved and cared for Paula as a daughter would for her mother. Debbie monitored Pep’s care at Cypress Pointe and was an able administrator of her financial affairs. Pep will be fondly remembered by all her surviving relatives and extended family of friends. Pep enthusiastically embraced her role as housewife and mother. She especially cherished summer vacations with family on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. She was an avid gardener, loved her pets and animals, and was periodically active in politics. Pep had a keen sense of justice and would fight unremittingly to defend what she believed to be right. Pep loved to watch the birds feeding outside her window at Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation Center where she resided during her final years. Physical therapy served to keep her motivated and mobile so that she could remain independent as long as she could. The family is thankful for the staff at Cypress Pointe who cared for her throughout her stay. In her final weeks Lower Cape Fear Hospice provided exceptional comfort and care. Per Paula’s request there will be no formal services and her burial will be private. Her remains will be with her husband and buried with their daughter in the family plots in Cinnaminson, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a local animal shelter or SPCA to honor Pep’s love of animals and her extensive volunteer work with the SPCA.
