Neil’s Obituary Neil E. Thornton, 92, of Texarkana, TX, formerly of Hot Springs, AR, died on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, in a local hospital. He was born September 29, 1927, in Hot Springs, AR, to D.P. and Beatrice Johnson Thornton. Neil grew up in Hot Springs, graduating from Hot Springs High School in 1945. Following his service in the United States Army, he attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, AR, graduating in 1951. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He became an accountant with Reynolds Mining Corporation and lived in Benton, AR, until his retirement. They returned to Hot Springs before moving to Texarkana, TX, to the Cornerstone Retirement Community. Neil loved woodworking, and following his retirement, he and his wife started a craft business. He also had a passion for gardening, and achieved the rank of Master Gardener. His love of gardening led him to begin working with Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hot Springs, and more recently a member of Williams Memorial United Methodist Church in Texarkana after relocating to be near his family. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 67 years, Joyce Stonecipher Thornton; two sons, James (Jim) Thornton and wife, Edye, and Charles (Chuck) Thornton and wife, Melanie; seven grandchildren, Amie Cannon and husband, Noah, Jeremy Thornton and wife, Krista, Matthew Thornton, Emery Ann ton and husband, Andrew, Megan Thornton and husband, Jaz Short, Daniel Thornton, and Patrick Thornton; ten great-grandchildren, Hailey, Millie Ann, Logan, Claire, McCarty, Isaac, Kaia, Eva, Shipley, and Elwood; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at the Cornerstone Retirement Community Chapel, 4100 Moores Lane, Texarkana, TX, with Dr. Brad Morgan and Rev. Dale Vickers officiating. A second memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 11, 2020, at First United Methodist Church, 1100 Central Ave, Hot Springs, AR, with Rev. David Mosely officiating. The family will receive guests following each service.
