Miriam Ruth Mechanic of Chestnut Ridge, NY passed away peacefully on January 25, 2020 with her loving family by her side after a brief illness at the age of 83. Born in Allentown, PA, (née Pearlman), she moved to Bensonhurst, NY at age 2. Mimi, as she was known to all, attended Lafayette High School and graduated from Brooklyn College with a Masters in Education. She was a beloved and inspiring elementary school teacher as well as a trainer of math teachers and felt great satisfaction when her former students would often come back to thank her many years later. Mimi was an avid reader and loved travel as well as movies. She had a particular passion for Broadway shows, always learning the entire score so she could sing, dance and conduct at home with her children. She adored her granddaughters and derived immense pleasure from spending time with them and watching them grow up. As a master chef, whether she was creating exotic dishes from around the world or her own take on traditional fare, you always felt the comfort of home. With the timing of a polished comedian, she found the humor in everyday things, and her infectious laugh could have you in stitches without even knowing what you were laughing at. She is survived by her loving husband Harold, her daughter Laura and her husband Anthony of Hastings on Hudson, NY, and her son David and his wife Michele of East Hampton, NY. She was the beloved grandma of Rachel and Sarah. Donations in her name can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
