Freda Maxine Dreher, age 88, of Iola, Kansas, passed away January 12, 2020, at the Allen County Regional Hospital, Iola, Kansas. Maxine was born June 29, 1931, in Kincaid, Kansas, to Willie Paul and Zella (Adams) Brooks. Maxine graduated from Kincaid High school in 1949. After high school she moved to Iola, where she worked at the Kress Store for a year, she then later worked as a telephone operator. On September 7, 1952, Maxine married Stanley Dreher, Jr. Their union was blessed with two children, Steven and Teresa. Maxine was a homemaker and worked alongside Stanley on the family farm. She raised an extravagant garden which helped provide food for her family. She loved to cook for silage and hay crews and the farm employees. Her days also consisted of running errands and food out into the fields. In 1986 Maxine went to work for the Register of Deeds for ten years. Maxine was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola, where she served on many committees through the years. These included the flower committee, Pastor Parish committee, and the communion committee. She also sang in the choir for many years and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Other clubs and social gatherings Maxine belonged to were the hobby club, music club, bridge club and Sorosis club. Maxine was also a member of the Allen County Hospital Auxiliary, the Allen County Election Board Committee, and was the Farm Bureau county woman chairman. In 1993 Maxine was nominated Allen County Farm Bureau Woman Leader of the Year. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Stanley; her parents; two brothers Willard Brooks (Joyce), Wilbur Brooks (Irene). Maxine is survived by her two children, Steven Dreher (Janet), Teresa Hays (Paul); four grandchildren Jason Dreher, Kasey Taul (Johnnie), Kristen Dreher, and Stephanie Hays; five great-grandchildren Taegan and Parker Taul, Landen Hays, Brody Dreher and Hudson James; sister-in-law, Nancy Brooks; brother-in-law, Claude Percy; and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 301 East Madison Avenue, Iola, Kansas. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Wesley United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow in the Gas Cemetery, Gas, Kansas.
