January 3 2020
Lillie Mae Bennett Campbell was born to the late Reverend John Henry Bennett and Lillie Anna Jane Bennett in Chesterfield, SC. She departed this life on January 3rd, 2020. She was the youngest of six children: Candace Graham, Emma McFarlan, Ella Mae McFarlan, Jerome Bennett and John Bennett. All of whom preceded her in death. She completed her secondary education in South Carolina, having attended Coulter Academy in the Anderson County school system. She then moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where she continued her matriculation at Johnson C. Smith University. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Reverend Carol Vincent Campbell, and to this union two daughters were born, Carolyn and Lillian. Two of her passions were preparing Sunday meals and serving her husband. When not preparing meals and serving she enjoyed bowling. Lillie Mae received Christ at the age of nine at St. James A.M.E. Zion church. After she relocated to Charlotte she joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at the Brevard Street location. She was a member of the usher board, choir, missionary circle and drama group and a faithful member of the Sunday school. While she served as First Lady of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church, she was very active with the Ministers’ Wives Auxiliary. She taught home making education with Charlotte Area Fund where she was able to exhibit her gift in serving others. Other places of employment included Delmar, Eckerds and office manager for one of Charlotte’s prominent physicians. Left to cherish her memory: two daughters, Carolyn Gary of Charlotte, NC; Lillian C. Hicks of Jonesboro, GA; three grandchildren: Tamika H. Jenkins (Derrick) of Stockbridge, GA; David Gary, Jr. (Elise) and Dannielle Gary both of Charlotte, NC; four great grandchildren: Donovan Jenkins and Taylin Jenkins both of Stockbridge, GA; Isaiah Gary and Caleb Gary both of Charlotte, NC: and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
