Sympathies message

  1. Mr. Dillow was good to my parents. My father, John “Billy” Mattingly, Sr., began working for Mervell Dean when he was age 16. As the eldest of six children, my father had to quit school and go to work full-time. Dad started out digging ditches. Mr. Dean put my father to work in the trades and my father soon took to painting. Mr. Dean and Mr. Dillow thought the world of my father. When my father married my mother, Gladys “Joie” Hayden, at age 21, and Mr. Dillow learned my father didn’t have the money for a honeymoon, he made and paid for their reservations in Virginia Beach and gave my father money for their trip. This was in 1957. Dad went on to become a billboard painter, and he worked for Mervell Dean until Mr. Dean sold the sign painting business. Mr. Dean also paid the hospital bill when my mother’s kidney’s fell after my eldest brother was born. My father owes his start and 40-year career in billboard painting to Mr. Dean. My parents are still married and live in Waldorf, Maryland. Mom told me she is glad that she found the time to thank Mr. Dillow for all that he did for them before his passing.
