John’s Obituary John Calvin Hancock Sr., age 95, of Beckley, WV passed away at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Monday, January 27, 2020. Born on April 2, 1924 in Daniels, WV, he was raised in Skelton, WV since he was six months old. Mr. Hancock was the son of the Willie E. Hancock and Annie Jane Page Hancock. He was a retired federal mine inspector, and was a former coal miner with 45 years of underground mining. Mr. Hancock was a member of the UMWA, and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. He enjoyed traveling, and had been in every state except for Rhode Island and Connecticut. Mr. Hancock had served in the US Navy. In addition to parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Brenda Gravely Hancock; second wife Margaret Meadows; infant sons Herbert and Ronnie Hancock, infant daughter Mary Hancock; two sons, William Edgar Hancock and Patrick Allen Hancock; brothers, Howard, Billy, Harold, Edgar, and Robert Hancock; a sister, Reva Thornton. Those survivors left to cherish his memory include three sons, John C. Hancock Jr. and wife Carol of Scarbro, Walter Hancock of Detroit, MI, and Roger Hancock and wife Linda of Scarbro. Two daughters, Nancy Ortiz and husband Frank of Scarbro, and Patty Dotson and husband Johnny of Oak Hill. Four special caregivers who cared for him during the last two years, Carolyn Cheese, Sue English, Katherine McGuire, and Kendra Meadows. Sixteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday, January 31, 2020 at noon with Pastor Mack Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral Home. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
