February 7 1948 January 27 2020
Jan (Rooks) Wagner, of The Villages, Florida and formerly of Columbus, Indiana passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 27, 2020 at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Florida at the age of 71. Jan was born in Williamsville, Illinois on February 7, 1948 to the late Raymond Rooks and Velma Rooks. She was a graduate of Columbus High School where she met her soul mate, John Wagner. John and Jan were married on August 25, 1968. They recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. She spent the first year of their marriage in El Paso, Texas while John finished his last year of college. They returned to Indiana in 1969 where she worked for Irwin Management. She then became a personal accountant for a Columbus family that allowed her to work from home so she could be with her two daughters. Also, early in her career, Jan started a fitness business with a childhood friend teaching aerobic classes for several years. Later in life, she discovered a passion for art and began attending classes where she learned to paint on her own. Jan was active in her girls’ school activities including being a room mom, cheerleading sponsor and organized other school functions. She also supported the girls with their after-school activities such as gymnastics, cheer, swimming and dance. After spending 30 years in the Columbus, Indiana area, they decided to start a new chapter and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. After 7 years, John took a new position in Houston, Texas. Finally, for the last 2 years, they have resided in The Villages, Florida. Jan was known to make friendships wherever she went. Whether that be the store clerk at her favorite retail store, hair salon, doctor’s office or with those in her neighborhood or town. Jan was proud of her family and it would be common that complete strangers would know details of her family before their conversation ended. Friendship was an important part of her life whether it was the Gourmet Group in Indiana or the Supper Club in Houston. She treasured friendships regardless of what state she was in. Nothing brought Jan more joy than her family. She enjoyed hosting events at their home for family and friends especially in the summer around the pool. She will be greatly missed by all those that knew her. Jan is preceded in death by her father Raymond Rooks. Survivors, in addition to her husband, John include: her mother, Velma Rooks, her two daughters, Jill (Todd) Adams and Jayna (Brad) Brooks and four granddaughters, Madeline and Kelsey Adams and Laney and Shelby Brooks, her siblings Ray (Diane) Rooks, Jim (Nancy) Rooks and Cathy (Brian) Simmons as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Brother Jimmie McGaha officiating. Family and friends may call from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday and 9:00 a.m. to time of service Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.
