George Riley Fletcher, son of the late Donald and Gladys Fletcher, was born in New Church, Virginia on July 12, 1941. He departed this life suddenly on Monday, January 13, 2020 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland. George was educated in the Accomack County Public School system. His Christian training began at an early age at Tabernacle Baptist Church. George was employed at P & L Poultry Plant and Golden Pride for many years. He later joined Holly Farms, now Tyson Foods, as a security guard and dedicated many years until his retirement. In recent years, he worked part-time at Royal Farms. George was united in holy matrimony to Lavenia Austin of Horntown on January 3, 1970. He loved to work in his yard, detail his cars, and play cards with his lifelong friend, Vernon Lee. George had two favorite tv shows that he really enjoyed, Judge Judy and Law & Order. He truly enjoyed spending time with his sisters, brothers, children, and especially his grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Gladys Fletcher; sister, Juanita Holden; mother-in-law, Mary Austin; brothers-in-law, James Austin, Clarence Austin, Henry Smith, and Johnny Holden. George leaves to cherish great memories: his wife of fifty years, Lavenia Fletcher; four daughters, Claudie (Tony) Cropper of Chesapeake, VA, Dolly (Marvin) Morris of Delmar, DE, Sherri (Steven) Shelton of Greenville, KY, and Sharon (Timothy) Anderson of Newark, DE; two sons, McKeever (Tracy) Byrd, Sr. of Newport News, VA and Mitchell (Mildred) Byrd, Sr. of Toano, VA; twelve grandchildren, Tasario (Shawn), Mitchell, Jr., Chrystal, McKeever, Jr., Monika, Tevin, Marvin, Marcell, Cody, Mario, Shelby “Sweet Sweet,” and Travis “Boot Boot;” nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Almeta Smith and Grace (Otis) Poole, both of New Church, VA; two brothers, Donald Fletcher, Jr. of Crisfield, MD and Norman (Brenda) Fletcher of New Church, VA; father-in-law, Irving Austin of Horntown, VA; brother-in-law, Kennis Austin of Horntown, VA; sisters-in-law, Mary C. Austin of Fond du lac, WI, Gladys Austin of Willingsboro, NJ, and Annette Austin of Pocomoke, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
