Obituary Gail D. Leyda, 73, Sycamore, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Jane Philips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 3, 2020 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel with interment to follow in Farm Ridge Cemetery in rural Sycamore, Kansas. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, February 2, 2020 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the chapel. Memorials may be made to Sycamore United Methodist Church and may be left with the chapel. Gail was born on January 1, 1947 to Bessie Inez (Bennett) Leyda Carr in Independence, Kansas. He graduated from Independence High School in 1965. While in high school, he worked at Tweedy’s Sinclair Service Station on West Laurel and Cottrell’s Phillips 66 at 10th and Main. After high school, Gail married Donna Diane Sherwin on November 4, 1966 in Neodesha, Kansas and joined the Air Force serving from 1966 to 1977. He graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1971 and was a licensed aircraft mechanic serving in Texas, Colorado, and Alaska. Gail moved back to Independence and worked at Bruest and Union Gas, in which he worked for over 24 years. He also worked with his father-in-law Jack on Sherwin Farms, which he continued to enjoy throughout his life. He has served on the Farm Service Commission, and Water District #4, 4-H Fair Board, and Sycamore Rural Fire Department, and was treasurer of Sycamore United Methodist Church. Those surviving Gail are wife Donna, of the home; children, Kirt Leyda (Shawna) of Topeka, KS; Julie Newby (Craig) of Coffeyville, KS; Bret Leyda (Sharla) of Liberty, KS; Dylon Leyda and Dalton Leyda of Independence, KS; grandchildren, Molly and Quinn Leyda, Jackson, Rhett, and Trey Newby, Lane Tucker, and Colby Leyda; and brother, Gary Houck (Donna) of California.
