Burton Charles Smith August 24, 1934 – January 26, 2020 Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation HOLTON – Burton Charles Smith, 85, of rural Holton, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 26, 2020. He was born August 24, 1934 at Holton, the son of Albert and Lucile Haag Smith. He graduated from Holton High School in 1952 and served in the Kansas National Guard for many years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Burton worked for many years as foreman for the Distribution Department for the City of Holton. He also worked for United Telephone of Kansas. Through all of this, he always wanted to farm. He started farming full time in the early 1970’s, operating a dairy, and later ran a stock cattle operation. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holton. Burton married his high school sweetheart, Bettie Fritts on November 1, 1956 at the home of Bettie’s parents in Holton. She survives, of the home. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son, David Smith, who died at birth, a sister, Mary Shaw and two brothers, Lyle Smith and Kenneth Smith. Other survivors include two sons, Warren Smith and wife Kathy, and Greg Smith, all of Holton; one brother, Dale Smith, Wamego; and two sisters, Linda West, Holton and Barbara Hayes, Topeka. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 31st at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in the Holton Cemetery. Burton will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where family and friends will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
