Arlen’s Obituary The former pastor of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Reverend Arlen L. Fowler passed away January 13, 2020. Rev. Fowler died peacefully Monday, January 13, 2020, in a Broken Arrow convalescent home at the age of ninety-one years, seven months and three days. Arlen Lowery Fowler was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, June 10, 1928 to the late Ben H. and Aleene (Clark) Fowler. Arlen grew up there, graduating from Bartlesville High School with the class of 1946. In November of 1950, Arlen and the love of his life, Mary Jane Ritchey were married at Bartlesville. Two years later Arlen was called to military service and soon sent to Korea as an Infantry Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. During the next thirty years he and his family moved often due to his careers in the military, the clergy and the university. Rev. Fowler continued his education, receiving degrees from Oklahoma A. & M. College (OSU), Princeton University and Washington State University. As a scholar he wrote a number of book reviews and papers. In 1976 he served as Associate Professor of History at Eastern Illinois University. In the same year he transferred his canonical residence to Oklahoma, working as President for Student Affairs at Tulsa University. He was the author of a number of books including “Facing Auschwitz, a Chronological Perspective”, and “The Black Infantry in the West.”. Among his many church assignments, he served congregations in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Washington, and Illinois. He served as a U.S. Army Chaplain during the Berlin Crisis. He was installed as Rector of St. Philips Ardmore, Oklahoma, in March of 1984 by Bishop McAllister and he served there until 1995. He was made a regional Dean in 1988, until 1995. The parents of four children, Sally, Clark, Andrew and Mary Christine, Arlen and Mary Jane had enjoyed over sixty-seven years of marriage, when Mary Jane passed away August 29, 2018. In addition to his wife and parents, Arlen was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Christine McArthur. Survivors include a daughter, Sally Haughey, Groton, Massachusetts; sons, Clark Fowler and wife, Valerie of Chicago, Illinois, Andrew Fowler and wife, Sue of Las Vegas, Nevada; his grandchildren, Courtney Ferrante, Liz Hartley, Ben Haughey, Caitlin McArthur, Kelsey McBoyd, Abbey Haughey and Levi Fowler; also great-grandchildren, Leo, Olivia, Kaiden and Kamden. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2020, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church conducted by Reverend Michael Stephenson. There was nothing Arlen liked better than an interesting conversation with a good friend; he could have an engaging conversation with anyone. It was often said that there wasn’t a stranger that Arlen didn’t know-or a smile kept to oneself. Rest in peace Arlen Fowler, you will be missed but not forgotten. Service arrangements and Cremation-With-Care are entrusted to Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home and Crematory. Words of comfort may be sent to the family online at www.hdouglasfuneralhome.com. Read More
