Harold Gaches, Pastor officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Oklahoma under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. The family will greet friends Tuesday evening, January 21, 2020 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Alvin Ray Shuler’s life-long love of, and service to, God, family and country ended peacefully Thursday morning, January 16, 2020. Affectionately known as “Ray”, he lived life to the fullest, serving his country for 22 years and retiring as a First Sergeant in the Field Artillery, followed by 20 years in the Civil Service before fully retiring in 1993. A staunch Christian man, Ray was a member of First Baptist West Church where in addition to teaching men’s Sunday school classes he selflessly gave of his time and energy to help renovate and expand the church facilities. Alvin Ray was born in Sylva, North Carolina on December 13, 1934 to Daisy and Sam Shuler and enlisted in the Army at the age of seventeen. In the field artillery he rose to the rank of first sergeant, serving two tours in Vietnam and multiple tours in the United States, Germany, Japan and Korea. In the civil service at Fort Sill he initially worked in field maintenance in the directorate of logistics before transitioning to the field artillery school to work training and combat development programs that greatly improved army and field artillery training and readiness. His meritorious accolades for serving his country include two awards of the bronze star medal and the Department of the Army meritorious civilian service award upon the occasion of his final retirement. To all with whom he served and had the distinct pleasure of knowing, Alvin Ray Shuler will be missed, but never forgotten. He is survived by his wife Valois of the home, one son and three daughters: Samuel Ray and his wife Vicki, San Antonio, Texas; Nancy Dolenar, Lawton; Patty Farley, Stockton, California; and Lori Hodges and her husband Rick, Kiefer, Oklahoma; one daughter-in-law: Teri Shuler, Franklin, North Carolina; six grandchildren: Tyler Stenstrom, Houston, Texas; Brent Stenstrom, Austin, Texas; Sarah Shuler, Franklin, North Carolina; Kaileigh Shuler, San Antonio, Texas; Lucy Hodges, Stillwater, Oklahoma; Gena Farley, Stockton, California; four brothers and one sister: Howard Shuler and his wife Phyllis, Virginia Beach, Virginia; Vance Shuler and his wife Melinda, Asheboro, North Carolina; Leroy and his wife Jo, Portland, Tennessee; Verlon and his wife Linda, Seneca, South Carolina; Florence Fox, Otto, North Carolina. His parents, brother John and son Mike Shuler preceded him in death. Donations in Ray’s honor can be mailed to the Leah M. Fitch Cancer Center, P.O.
