Ann Kovalo, 103 of Shadyside, Ohio died Friday, December 20, 2019, at Continuous Healthcare of Shadyside. She was born June 30, 1916, a daughter of the late Martin and Mary (Kavulics) Lenart Sr. in Hannastown, PA. Dedicated mother and wife of the late Charles Kovalo of Shadyside, Ohio. Ann was a homemaker and Christian by upbringing. She was preceded in death by her parents, including a step-father Michael Yakubisin, her husband, as well as a sister, Mary Smigill and her brothers Martin Lenart Jr, Joseph Lenart and Adam Lenart. She is survived by her sons, John Kovalo of Bainbridge, Ohio and Arnold Kovalo of Shadyside, Ohio. In addition, she is survived by her nieces and nephews, Walter Smigill Jr, Richard Smigill, Mary Ann Smigill, the late Martin Lenart Jr., and Judy Lenart. Ann Kovalo was a true “coal miner’s daughter”, growing up and thriving under difficult circumstances. Barely out of infancy, she lost two brothers and her natural Father in the Spanish Influenza outbreak of 1919. The surviving children enrolled in a one-room schoolhouse in Bannock, Ohio, where they learned English [Slovak being spoken in the home, as was the custom]. Moving to Cresap, WV to seek work, the family endured periodic hunger and want before finally settling in Powhatan Point, Ohio, where the family grew up with Mike finishing his career in the Powhatan #1 mine. It was there that she met Charles “Shorty” Kovalo from Dilles Bottom and they wed on December 7th, 1942. Charles died in February 1979, but Ann went on to have one hundred good years, free of any medications and able to eat what she wanted, and was aware and in good spirits – a remarkable achievement. Her health finally declined after reaching the Century mark, and the staff of Continuous Healthcare should be commended for their taking such good care of her until she passed. Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory 3900 Central Ave, Shadyside Ohio 43947 on Friday, December 27, 2019, from 10 am until time of service at 12 pm with Rev. James Hoff officiating. Burial will follow in Powhatan Cemetery in Powhatan Point, Ohio. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shadyside Fire and Rescue Squad, 4210 Central Ave.,or at “TMCFunding.com”. Shadyside.
