Richard “Poochie” Smith January 30, 1947 – November 25, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Memorial Donation CARENCRO ~ Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 1, 2019, at an 11:00 a.m. Liturgy of the Word service in Evangeline Memorial Gardens Chapel in Carencro for Richard “Poochie” Smith, age 72, who passed away Monday, November 25, 2019, at his residence in Carencro. Interment will be in Evangeline Memorial Gardens in Carencro. The Rev. Gary Schexnayder will officiate at the services. Mr. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Carencro having been a parishioner of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. He was employed with ODECO for over twenty years, owned multiple businesses, and was a self-employed Oilfield Consultant. Poochie also trained racehorses for over forty years and served as Ward Constable of Carencro for several terms. Richard had so much love in his heart. He was tough, but he loved beyond compare. He always helped others in need, and regardless of the gruff exterior, he had a kindness that surpassed all else. He loved his children unconditionally and was a wonderful father and provider. He dearly loved his horses and pets as well. Richard will be missed by many. Survivors include his wife, Becky Smith; two sons, Mark Smith of Minot, ND, and Gabe Smith of Lafayette, LA; four daughters, Angela Smith and her significant other, Dennis Webb, Karen Middleton and her husband, Rick, all of Clayton, NC, Terri Ellis and her husband, Russell, of San Saba, TX, and Kari Doucet and her husband, Gerald, of Lake Charles, LA; nine grandchildren, Trey Bajat and his wife, Stormy, Russton Ellis, Mckenzie Hibler, Hannah Hibler, Mason Middleton, Jett Hibler, Ian Middleton, Carley Middleton, Kollin Doucet; two great grandchildren, Pierce Bajat and Roman Bajat; one brother, Mancil Smith and his wife, Elsie, of Opelousas, LA; one sister, Mary Grace Tauzin of Carencro, LA; and one sister-in-law Lelia Smith of Lafayette, LA; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred Smith of Carencro and Louise Bernadette Quebedeaux Smith of Arnaudville; three brothers, Shelton Smith and his wife, Janet, Patrick Smith and an infant brother, Rudy; one sister, Mary Ella Hebert and her husband, Jerry; and one brother-in-law, Lucien Tauzin. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Saturday and will continue from 8:00 a.m. until service time on Sunday. Pallbearers will be Russell Ellis, Rick Middleton, Jett Hibler, Mason Middleton, Kurt Smith and Kyle Delahoussaye. Honorary pallbearers will be Mancil Smith and Ian Middleton.
