Mary Jane McCowan 1931

1931
Obituary Mary Jane McCowan, of Dover, DE, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Springfield, Ohio in 1931 to the late Howard and Mildred Michel. She was the youngest of three daughters, which meant she always had her sisters to look out for her and someone to chat with. As a child, Mary was a big fan of asking “why” in regards to just about everything. Being a very inquisitive child led Mary to many years of education and ultimately, she became a Registered Nurse. Shortly after graduating, Mary met her soon-to-be husband and they were wed in January of 1956. Jim’s career with the railroad moved the family, including their two beautiful daughters, from Ohio to Indiana to New York and eventually settled in Delaware, where Mary worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital for 20+ years. She retired from the VA Hospital in 1994, but she continued her work as an RN at Limestone Presbyterian Church (parish nurse), Emily P. Bissel Nursing Home, and Delaware Home for the Chronically Ill. Mary proudly held an active nursing license up until just recently! Mary was a compassionate woman that truly enjoyed helping and caring for others, but when she had spare time, she enjoyed volunteering, ceramics, gardening and drawing/painting. She was also an avid reader of the newspaper, especially the horoscopes and Dear Abby column with her granddaughter Nicole, romances, history and even books about her beloved Cincinnati Reds. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, especially hanging out in her backyard pool for many summers on end. She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Freeman (Steve) and Meredith Moore (Keith); her four grandchildren, Chris, Nicole, Ian and Jamie; and her four great grandchildren, Cameron, Romyn, Austin and Alexis. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Mildred; her two sisters, Clara and Martha; and her husband, Jim, with whom she shared 38 years of devoted marriage. Services for Mary will be held privately for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to the Salvation Army of Wilmington, 400 N. Orange Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. To send flowers to Mary’s family, please visit our floral section.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mary Jane McCowan 1931.
