November 23 2019
Obituary Janet D. Knol, age 97, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, went to be with the Lord on November 24, 2019 at Raybrook Manor of the Holland Home, with two of her sons at her side. Janet was born, grew up, and lived most of her life in Grand Rapids. Her parents were Johanna Harms Pettinga and Peter Pettinga and she was the 3rd of 5 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Ernest Pettinga and Richard Pettinga, her sister Louise Maring, her husband Jack, and her grandson Adam Knol. She is survived by her brother William Pettinga, her sons and their wives, Jim and Kathy Knol, John and Nancy Knol, Jack and Beth Knol, and Joe and Tilda Knol; by grandchildren Timothy Knol, Stephanie Knol, Meghan Knol, Jane (Knol) Zwart, Luke Knol, Jonathan Knol, Jeffrey Knol, and Kevin Knol; by 13 great-grandchildren; and by numerous nephews and nieces. She worked as a bookkeeper and as an administrative assistant as a young woman, taught 4H sewing for years while raising her four sons. She was active in the Ladies’ Guild for years in the Burton Heights Christian Reformed Church. She was the impetus for extensive travel in the United States and Canada with her family, and, after her husband retired, to Spain, Europe, and China. She accompanied her husband Jack on administrative assignments in missions to Liberia, Africa, where she taught Bible School, and to Rehoboth, NM. She taught after-school Bible School for a number of years in Grand Rapids. She provided care for 7 years to her husband after he developed dementia. She would have said that her most significant accomplishment was raising her sons in the way of the Lord. The family thanks the staff and nurses at Raybrook for the care they have provided over the past 10 years, and for which Janet was grateful. Her life will be honored on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Raybrook Manor Chapel (2121 Raybrook, Grand Rapids MI) with a time for visitation at 10 am, a Funeral Service at 11 am; followed by a reception at 12 noon in the Friendship Room at Raybrook Manor.
