Girldine “Gerry”‘s Obituary Gazette – Monday with Photo and Waite Logo Girldine R. (Martin) Rucker, affectionately known as Gerry to many, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was born on June 10, 1923 in Alliance, Ohio to Pher and Myrtle Carter Martin; and raised in Medina by her aunt and uncle, Jeanette and Miles Washington. Gerry attended and graduated from Medina Senior High School in 1942. Upon graduation, she worked at the American Hotel, cleaning rooms, until its closure. Gerry then became employed with Medina Community Hospital, working in the House Keeping Department, until an opening for Nurse’s Aide became available. Gerry worked as a Nurse’s Aide, taking courses to become an LPN. Upon receiving licensure, she began working in the Surgical Department as a scrub Technician, later becoming a Surgical Technician for 32 years. Upon retirement, she worked part-time at Gowe Printing with her sister Olive Martin for 15 years. Gerry was also volunteer working with the Chaplin Department for Medina Community Hospital. Sister Gerry was a member of Second Baptist Church for 82 years, where she served as President of The Missionary Board, Church Clerk, Food Bank, and sang in the Senior Choir. She also was a member of the American Legion Post 202 Women’s Auxiliary for 52 years where she served wherever she was needed. She will always be remembered for total dedication to her church family and her community, as well as her gifts and love for baking and making homemade candy. Gerry leaves to mourn, but celebrate her life her son, David P. (Stephanie) Rucker; daughters, Gloria D. Johnson, Brenda J. Brown-Alexander; sister, Olive Martin; brother, Peter Martin; grandchildren, Herb (Jamie) Porter, Denise, Delores, Anthony, Lavonne Brown, Darius, Ian, Quinn Rucker; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, David V. Rucker; sisters, Anna Jane Martin, Pearl Lee Yates; brother Charles Martin; parents, Pher and Myrtle Martin; foster parents, Jeanette and Miles Washington; and great-grandson Xavier Porter. Family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court. St, Medina, OH 44256. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 22, 2019 at Second Baptist Church, 451 Bronson St., Medina, OH 44256, with interment to follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.
