David Hubbard, Associate Pastor of Lawton First Assembly officiating. Burial will follow in Elgin Memorial Lawn. Sarah Lou Hobbs, former Elgin resident, passed away in Dallas, Texas Saturday, October 12, 2019. Sarah Lou Stone was born to William “Shorty” and Verna Stone in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma on December 8, 1928. She went to school in Anadarko and Dibble. Sarah married M.F. “Bill” Hobbs on December 5, 1945 in Apache, Oklahoma. They were married almost 50 years, until Bill passed away November 11, 1995. They began their married life in Apache before moving to Elgin. They had four children: Kurtis, Omega, Kerwin and Grady Hobbs. Sarah gave her life to the Lord when she was a young girl and she lived her life for her Lord all the days of her life. She was happy to share the story of being a charter member of Elgin First Assembly of God Church. She was there before the building was erected and helped grow it from the ground up. She served the church in several capacities such as Sunday school teacher, Bible study leader and church treasurer. Before moving to Dallas, she joined Lawton First Assembly. Sarah started working at a young age, picking cotton with her family. A job she would continue to do with her husband and children. Sarah was a cook for several area cafes, before opening her own in Elgin in the 1960’s. If you didn’t eat her cooking, you more than likely enjoyed her baked goods and pastries. Sarah baked and decorated numerous wedding cakes for local brides. Her cakes and pies were on many holiday tables in the area. In addition to the sales of baked goods, Sarah donated thousands of doughnuts and fried pies to fundraisers. Among the recipients of her generosity was the Elgin booster club to sell at ball games and Elgin’s First Assembly of God Church to sell for various missions and church needs. Sarah also worked at Fort Sill, Humpty Dumpty bakery, Underwood’s BBQ, Furr’s Cafeteria, ending her employment life at Goodyear Tire and Rubber where she worked for 11 years before retiring due to injuries. Sarah is survived by her three sons Kurtis Hobbs and wife Sharon of Midlothian Texas, Grady Hobbs and wife Terri of Heath, Texas and Kerwin Hobbs of Cache, Oklahoma; five grandchildren left behind are Stacy Frye, Buddy Ballou, Krystal Hobbs, Krisan Patterson and Lawson Hobbs; plus one great-granddaughter Lacey Ballou; sisters, Mary Ruth Rutledge and Rhonda Jean Walker, both of California; also numerous nieces, nephews and Sarah’s special caretaker, Debbie Hobbs. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hobbs, her parents, William and Verna Stone, her daughter, Omega Ballou Beard, and granddaughter Brandy Hobbs as well as her brother Culver Stone and sisters Willaree Rutledge and Doris White.
