Stevens January 19, 1924 – September 26, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guestbook Entries| Memorial Donation Ruth Elizabeth Potter Stevens, of Afton, Virginia, passed away on September 26, 2019. Born January 19, 1924 at Lime Lake, town of Machias, Cattaraugus County, New York State, she was the daughter of Elmer M. Potter and Elizabeth B. Wurst Potter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Clare L. Sanford; a son, Gary P. Sanford and two daughters, Barbara L. Sanford and Carol L. Sanford; her second husband, Howard Stevens; a sister, Louise L. Potter; a brother, Paul E. Potter and Sir Tegyr, of Afton, her beloved Airedale Terrier. Mrs. Stevens was a member of the United Methodist Church of Machias, N.Y., a member of the Albemarle Chapter, NSDAR of Charlottesville, Va., an associate member of the Olean Chapter, NSDAR of Olean, N.Y., and a member of the Mayflower Descendants of Plymouth, Mass. She attended schools in Machias, N.Y. and the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. She served three terms as a member of the Board of Education for the Delevan-Machias Central School system and was elected to the post of District Clerk for the Delevan-Machias Central School system from 1954-1965. She retired from her clerical positions at the Delevan-Machias Central School, Delevan, N.Y. and the Pioneer Central School, Yorkshire, N.Y. in 1979. After her move to Afton, Va. in 1983 with her husband, Howard, she took a position at Piedmont Virginia Community College. Mrs. Stevens is survived by a granddaughter, Erika Sanford Laabs (Cory Laabs) of Oconomowoc, Wis.; a grandson, Paul D. Provencher of Auburn, Mass.; daughter-in-law, Ella Sanford; step-daughters, Jacqueline Stevens Howlett and Vanessa Stevens Bookmiller; great-grandchildren, Brett, Emma, and Sarah Laabs; step-grandchildren, step- great-grandchildren; and her very dear friends, Alan and Joyce Fortune, of Afton. Her family and friends thank all the staff at Old Trail and Legacy Hospice for all their care and compassion. Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2019 – in Maple Grove Cemetery of Machias, N.Y.
