Ronda’s Obituary Ronda Kay Whelan, 64, of Mexico, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at the King’s Daughters Home in Mexico. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 7, at St. Brendan Catholic Church with Fr. Lou Dorn officiating. Visitation is Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home. Ronda was born on June 4, 1955 in Hannibal, the daughter of JC Stratton and Gladys (Collins) Stratton. After graduating from Mark Twain High School in Center, she relocated to Perry. Ronda first met the love of her life, Kenny Whelan, at a wedding of a mutual friend. Kenny and Ronda were married in 1974 at St. William’s Catholic Church in Perry. In 1984, the couple relocated to Mexico, where Ronda worked in the purchasing department at the Missouri Veterans Home for 27 years, retiring on October 1, 2012. Motherhood was one of Ronda’s greatest joys. She and Kenny had three children and were very involved in their lives, never missing a sporting event or school activity. She was also a very proud grandmother to four grandchildren. Ronda and Kenny loved to golf and travel. They frequently took golf vacations, with Gulf Shores, AL, being her favorite. She also loved the beautiful scenery and enjoyed sitting on the beach and reading. Mrs. Whelan was a longtime member of St. Brendan Catholic Church. She was famous for crocheting and has made many beautiful afghans, scarfs, purses and sweaters throughout the years. She was also known for making jewelry. Survivors include her husband, Kenny Whelan of the home; three children, Heather (Richard) Casey and Julie (Brad) Rowe, all of Mexico, and Anthony Whelan of Kansas City; four grandchildren, Jaicee and Raegan Casey, and Kennedi and Karson Rowe; one sister, Cathie (Mark) Whelan Sorrill of Hannibal; three brothers, Bobby Lake, Gary Lake and Eric Lake, all of New London; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Virginia (Don) Cruise, Rose Woodhurst, Ruth Whelan, Brenda Whelan, Gerald (Morgan) Whelan, Jane (Steve) Hickman, Dan (Shari) Whelan, Steven (Marsha) Whelan, Debbie (Eddie) Morawitz, Mike (Sheila) Whelan, Brent (Dawn) Whelan and Dave (Mark White) Whelan; and multiple nieces and nephews. Ronda was preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Gladys and Kenneth Lake; her father, JC Stratton; her in-laws, Doug and Mary Whelan; two brothers-in-law, J.D. Whelan and Neil Woodhurst; and one nephew, Doug Whelan. Memorial donations may be made to the King’s Daughters Home or St. Brendan Catholic Church.
