Phillips Meredith Smalling, age 59, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019. He was born August 22, 1960, in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. After graduating from Red Boiling Springs High School, he attended the University of Tennessee where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in political science and a Juris Doctor degree. He was an attorney at the Law Office of Hassler & Smalling in Byrdstown, TN, for over twenty-five years. Along with many successes, he served on the Board of Directors at Progressive Savings Bank for over twenty-five years. He was passionate about playing and watching sports as well as coaching his children in basketball when they were younger. He especially enjoyed rooting on the UT Vols…even in the bad times. Phillips’s quick wit, dry sense of humor, charismatic stories, and giving heart will be missed by many. He is preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Geraldine Smalling. He is survived by his three children: Danielle Smalling of Miami, FL, Chelsea Stephens (Justin) of Cincinnati, OH, and Hunter Smalling of Byrdstown, TN, and a host of cousins and friends. No services have been scheduled at this time. For those who would like to express their sympathy, the family has requested donations be made in his honor to the Cain Fund at the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program.
