Patricia’s Obituary Patricia Boyer Candler Cushman, 90, of Wakefield, Rhode Island, died peacefully with her family at her side on October 14, 2019, after a brief illness. Pat was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in nearby Grosse Pointe, where she lived with her family until she married Robinson Cushman in 1951. Pat was an avid gardener, an amazing cook, a world traveler and cruise enthusiast, a dog lover, and friend to many. Pat’s last years were filled with some challenges but also many new friends, both human and canine. With her direct manner and quick wit, Pat always had numerous people stopping by for a visit and a glass of wine, often bringing their dogs along to get a cookie or to just share a laugh while Pat sipped her champagne and pink lemonade. Pat was a generous animal philanthropist and an ardent supporter of climate change initiatives, both locally and globally. As a lifelong member of The Dunes Club, Pat could often be found on the terrace having lunch on a beautiful summer day, enjoying the sound of the waves and the salt in the air, just as she had as a young girl summering in Narragansett with her sister, Jane Bragaw Vanderzee. Pat graduated from Miss Hall’s school in 1947 and from Franklin College in 1950. Pat began married life in Virginia Beach, while her husband was stationed in the Navy. In 1955 they moved to Connecticut, living in numerous beautiful homes that always included a stunning garden, a glorious swimming pool and a welcoming kitchen. In 1972, the family moved to Rhode Island, where a new chapter unfolded; living on the open ocean with nothing but large craggy rocks between the house and the Atlantic. Although divorced in 1979, Pat and Robin remained close friends until Robin’s death in 1999. Pat is survived by her three remaining children, William Sanderson Cushman of Jamestown RI, Alexander Haynes Cushman of Burlington CT, and Jennifer Alden Cushman Boghossian of Boston MA. Patricia was pre-deceased by a son, Robinson Cushman II (b.1958-d.1958) and her daughter Victoria Elizabeth Cushman (b.1959- d.1989). Pat has six grandchildren, Alexis Loss, Mallory Amory, Libby Boghossian, Chip Boghossian, Alex Boghossian and Sandy Cushman, (b.1982-d.2003). Pat also has a great grandson, Eli Loss. A special and heartfelt thanks to HopeHealth Hospice and the wonderful staff at South County Hospital for their support, kindness and expertise in helping Pat and her family in this difficult time, and to Pat’s many neighborhood friends, her nurse Ruthanne and all the caregivers that helped Pat on a daily basis.
