Nelson February 14, 1934 – October 20, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation NELSON, Lyda, 85 of Vandalia, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 20 at her home while embraced in love and prayer by her family. She was born to Jeff and Beatrice Hunter on February 14, 1934 in Algood, Tennessee. After graduating as the valedictorian of her high school class, a fateful trip to the post office introduced her to Fred Nelson. Lyda and Fred moved to Ohio, raised 3 sons, and were happily married for 45 years until his passing in 1998. Lyda continued their legacy of dedication to family by embedding herself in the hearts of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was a warm, safe and comforting haven filled every Sunday night with the laughter of children playing, the aromas of southern cooking, and the gathering of multi-generations of family and neighbors. She took delight in watching the children grow, and their pictures and works of art were displayed with pride. Every person who entered her home was greeted with a beautiful smile, a gentle voice, and encouraging words. And every person who left her home was well-fed, armed with a bag of cookies, and profoundly loved. Lyda was also preceded in death by her beloved eldest son, Phil; and her sister, Reba Pharris. She is survived by sons and daughters-in law, Tim and Becky Nelson; Jeff and Becky Nelson; and Sheri Nelson; grandchildren and their families, David, Lisa, Drew and Caroline Nelson; Timothy, Kristen, Ella, Jake and Lucy Nelson; Matthew and Kayla Nelson; Sarah, Josh and Shawn Droulias; Meghan, Travis, Belle and Gage Williams; Brittany and Michael Duffy; Jenna and Cameron Myers; Zach Nelson; Olivia and Damian Gilleland and Emberly Mead; sister Wanda Jackson; brother Harold Hunter; numerous nieces, nephews and friends including the “adopted Nelsons” neighbors Steve, Bonnie, Troy and Lauren Davis. The family would like to thank Olivia for the many months of dedicated, loving care she gave to Lyda. A graveside service to honor her memory will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday October 23 at Polk Grove Cemetery, 3710 W. National Road, Vandalia, OH 45377.
