James’ Obituary James Jones was born January 25, 1937 in Eudora, Arkansas to his parents John and Adeline Jones. He was 1 of 14 children; Martha, John, Lucinda, Alice, Ethel, Ella, Eliza, Roosevelt, Lilly, Curtis (Twin), Scipeo, Alvin and William. Eliza and Lilly are still with us today! He was very close to all his siblings and loved them dearly. James accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the tender age of 15 years old. James had the privilege and honor to serve our great country by enlisting in the United States Army. While he was serving, he was stationed in Berlin, Germany and continued his service for three years. Being overseas James became culturally diverse and he mastered the art of saying goodbye in various languages. He would say, “adios, arrivederci, ciao, au revoir, sayonara.” After being discharged from the Military, James moved to Memphis, Tennessee. There, he reunited with his brother Scipeo and helped look after his nieces and nephew while they worked. Shortly thereafter, James moved to the bustling city of Chicago, IL where he met his future wife Delphine Brady through his cousin. They were married November 21, 1959 nearly 60 years ago by The Rev. Clay Evans. To their union they had 3 children: Billy (Roberta – deceased) Jones, James (Elise) Jones and Linda (Wythe) Crowe. James was adamant that his wife be a stay at home Mom to raise their 3 children. He was a Chevrolet car enthusiast; he purchased his first car which was a Chevy Impala in the mid 60’s and his second one in yellow in the 70’s. James was a hardworking Husband and Father; he worked for Dresher Manufacturing as a Painter for 32 years and he never missed a day’s work. He earned his GED after he had a family and his kids helped him with his homework. James also worked for the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Chicago as an Attendant for 7 years before he officially retired. Living a life of freedom during his retirement, James was able to enjoy life. James liked to hunt; fishing was not his forte. But the one time he did fish he caught a huge turtle and exclaimed, “What the hell is this?!” when it came on his fishing line. James enjoyed his wife’s classic sweet potato pies and 7-Up pound cakes. Like a true city man, the Chicago Cubs were his team! You could almost always catch James with his Cubs jacket and baseball cap on. He loved watching all sports. James was an avid traveler; you would always see him at a Family Reunion in various states and he always wanted to go to Timbuktu! We would always question him, “Does Timbuktu even exist?” James was a man of routine and very predictable. He enjoyed wearing his plaid shirts and jeans, he would read the news-paper daily and drink his cup of Folger’s coffee. He would always run his errands with a cigar in his mouth. He loved going grocery shopping for the family and he was always up for a good sale! He loved sitting in the kitchen in his favorite chair telling stories. He particularly enjoyed when company would come over because it gave him a reason to pull out all the family photo albums. James was a wise, hardworking, intelligent, charismatic man. He had a quiet spirit and he would light up every room he walked into with his million-dollar smile. James was great at giving advice; he would say, “It’s your little red wagon; you can either push it or pull it” “Grab the bull by the horns” and when it came to love he would say “I love you like a bulldog loves a bone”. We will cherish all the memories we have created with him and continue to celebrate his legacy: grandchildren, Latoya Jones, Omari Jones, Sharnea Simmons, Jasmine Jones, Jalynn Jones and Praise Djansi, Shawn Crowe, Shawna Crowe; great-grand-children: Gabriel Gilhooly and Malaysia Johnson; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
